New Rule: No Coffee After 2 by Valerie Hoven

As a coffee addict, I drink coffee until at least 3pm before switching to soda. Well, that has to change. It’s no secret that I have too many ailments, especially for being in my 20s. And dehydration is one of them. So I’m switching to GATORADE! I love it! The orange flavor rocks. And that is my new afternoon drink. Water is just too boring. But hopefully this good habit lasts.

This is coming after losing our office Biggest Loser competition – again. And after suffering from low blood pressure and iron. I need some hydration, and I don’t like water, and coffee and soda don’t count. So I’m sort of excited for my Gatorade.

And as noted above, my illness is so secret. So really it’s the sick high school kid inside me who could never play sports who is excited to have an 8-pack of Gatorade in my apartment right now. Makes me seem cool, active and athletic. And I am 🙂 I’m healthy, a sailor and injured skier (bruised rotator cuff). Yeah, I sort of sound like a badass right now talking about my Gatorade and bruised rotator cuff!

Not sure how this happened, but Yammer is no longer blocked at my work! Thank you secret angel… 🙂

P.S. Sorry for the slowness on the blog. It’s been a busy week! Plus, my computer is slow, so I’m slow… but it’s being replaced next week and I get DUAL monitors! Thanks, boss!

My company blocked Yammer! by Valerie Hoven

So after I became a hero at my hospital, IT went and blocked Yammer. Yup. What do I do now? I feel helpless. I thought they were on my side.

A couple weeks ago, I posted a story on my intranet about Yammer. I told employees about it and all the wonderful ways it can help you at work. Dozens of people joined within days. Within a couple weeks, we reached 100+ members of Yammer (up from roughly 50). Conversations more than doubled on Yammer, too, after that announcement. I even wrote a blog post about all the wonders of Yammer.

Now, the almighty IT department came and shut us down. I keep getting emails asking why the site is down or if the link is broken. I have to break their hearts and say “It’s not you, it’s not me, it’s IT.”

And yes, IT also blocks YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. And my hospital has pages on all of the above.

Sharepoint Designer Virgin by Valerie Hoven

I’m about to use Sharepoint Designer for the first time today! Our corporate IS team won’t let us use it, but I found out that our School of Medicine WILL let us use it! (I have to manage sites for both entities sometimes, but two different organizations on two different servers…)

So I already told our Webmaster to not expect any more Web work from me today, as I’m playing with my intranet site for the rest of the day 🙂

The co-organization project is actually for our marketing departments. Sometimes the hospital writes stories about patients with lung disease, but our school of medicine might have a video  from a doctor about lung disease, so I’m creating a joint intranet site where we can post our stories, videos and podcasts and share them with each other. No use in reinventing the wheel folks! I’m thinking of making the site a wiki. Any suggestions?

Being in my 20s means I’m often broke. So I sign up for clinical trials to make some quick cash. I got one today asking for volunteers for a birth control. Isn’t that a little scary? If it doesn’t work… you get a baby!

Google search brought this up. Very easy instructions. Just did it to a dozen photographs for our transplant section. Looks so much nicer on our Web site with rounded edges than squares. Squares are for squares!
